11 Best Dirt Bike Trails in VA

Two Dirt Bike Riders

1. Taskers Gap/Peters Mill Run Trail

Among the top places for dirt bike riding in Virginia is the Taskers Gap/Peters Mill Run Trail System. It is two trail systems separated by one hard top road, comprising 36 miles of trails.

The system is part of the GW National Forest and is managed by the Lee Ranger District. Day and annual passes are available at the district office or the 7-11 in Woodstock, Va.

Taskers Gap’s trails vary from moderate to advanced, but even the easier sections are generally very rutted and rocky. Peters Mill Run is a very moderate trail (a former road) in the middle. However, both ends, and the southern end, especially, are very steep and rocky. They meet or exceed the standard for advanced.

It only has one off-shoot trail, numbered 457, but that trail is among the most famously technical of all Virginia’s trails. Comfort with navigating boulders (and complete armor and boots) is a must for that trail.

The trail is open for both motorized and non-motorized users, with the weekends seeing a significant influx of motorized users. ATV and motorcycle riders, alongside 4-wheel drivers, can enjoy the area. Mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrians may also use the paths for their activities.

Maps and toilets are available at the trailheads of both systems. Take State Route 675, at the northern end of the town of Edinburg, Virginia, to reach both trails. Visit the USDA website for more info, including maps and rules.

2. South Pedlar Trail

Two trails make up the South Pedlar Trail System: the Terrapin trail and Rattlesnake trail. The trail system, located at the intersection of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Elon Road, Monroe, Virginia 24574, is a coiling system of trails in the Bedford area, measuring 19 miles. There are challenging, narrow, and twisting paths as well as comprehensive and inviting trails.

The trail allows ATVs, motorbikes, and mountain bikes. Panoramic views, seasonal mountain laurel blooms, enormous tree groves, and a lovely forest canopy await riders and bikers in South Pedlar Trail.

From April to November runs the trail’s open season. Operational hours are from sunrise to sunset. The route also requires a special recreation permit. Vehicles must not exceed 1,500 pounds and must not exceed 50 inches in width.

3. Patterson Mountain Trail

The Patterson Creek Trail is a challenging trail system with many difficult climbs, though its remoteness is a prerequisite for the beautiful sights of ridgetops and downhill runs. In terms of length, it measures over 9 miles. There are also plans for the trail system to have another 20 miles for mountain biking.

The Patterson Creek Trail is off Route 606, around 10 miles to the northwest of Fincastle. More specifically, it is in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest. The Roanoke IMBA group is exerting a lot of effort to maintain and develop a large-scale Price-Patterson Mountain Trail System.

4. Spearhead Trails

The Spearhead Trails are popular for the off-road experiences they offer due to their uniqueness and challenges. These are not limited to motor-driven and OHV experiences; however, Spearhead Trails also provide areas for biking, hiking, and horseback riding.

It is a world-renowned place to be, boasting over 550 miles of trail encompassed in over six trail systems that can meet any skill level.

Subsequently, it interconnects with the Ridley Creek State Park trails. Located mostly on Natural Lands Trust-owned property, the course has an estimated length of 2.5 miles with white trail markers.
